Aftercare Guide
Chemical Peels Aftercare
Reviewed by Dr. Alexander Landfield, Board-Certified Neurologist
Your chemical peel has initiated a powerful skin renewal process. Follow this aftercare guide to support your skin's natural exfoliation, prevent complications, and reveal the fresh, glowing skin underneath.
Immediately After Treatment
- 1Mild redness and tightness are normal — your skin may feel like a mild sunburn
- 2Apply the post-peel moisturizer or balm provided by your clinician
- 3Do NOT wash your face or apply any products for the time specified by your clinician (varies by peel type)
- 4Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
First 24 Hours
- Follow specific wash-off timing for your peel type (VI Peel: leave on 4+ hours; BioRePeel: no wash needed)
- Gently cleanse with a mild, sulfate-free cleanser when directed
- Apply a rich, gentle moisturizer — your skin will feel tight and dry
- Do NOT apply retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or any active ingredients
- Avoid makeup for 24 hours (or as directed for your specific peel)
- Stay out of direct sunlight
First Week
- Peeling typically begins on day 2–3 and continues through day 5–7
- Do NOT pick, pull, or peel flaking skin — let it shed naturally
- Keep skin heavily moisturized — reapply moisturizer multiple times daily
- Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen when going outdoors (critical during peeling phase)
- Avoid sweating, swimming, saunas, and hot water on the face
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid irritating fabrics
Long-Term Care & Maintenance
- New, fresh skin is revealed after peeling completes (usually by day 7–10)
- Continue strict sun protection for 4+ weeks — new skin is highly photosensitive
- Gradually reintroduce active ingredients (retinoids, vitamin C) after 1–2 weeks
- Schedule your next peel in 4–6 weeks for a series (typically 3–6 peels for best results)
- Maintain results with a consistent at-home skincare routine
Things to Avoid
- Picking, pulling, or peeling flaking skin (causes scarring and hyperpigmentation)
- Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and exfoliating products for 5–7 days minimum
- Direct sun exposure for 2–4 weeks (the #1 cause of post-peel complications)
- Hot water, saunas, steam rooms, and heavy exercise during the peeling phase
- Swimming in chlorinated pools for 7–10 days
- Waxing or threading the treated area for 2 weeks

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does chemical peel peeling last?
Peeling typically begins on day 2–3 after the chemical peel and continues through day 5–7. The intensity of peeling depends on the peel depth: light peels (like BioRePeel) cause minimal, fine flaking; medium peels (like VI Peel) produce more noticeable sheet-like peeling. Not all patients peel visibly — lack of visible peeling does NOT mean the treatment didn't work.
What if I don't peel after a chemical peel?
Some patients experience minimal visible peeling, especially after their first treatment or with lighter peels. This is normal and does NOT mean the peel was ineffective. The chemical exfoliation process occurs at the cellular level whether or not you see dramatic peeling. Your skin is still renewing and improving. With subsequent peels, you may notice more visible peeling as the treatment builds on previous sessions.
How many chemical peels do I need for results?
Most skin concerns benefit from a series of 3–6 chemical peels spaced 4–6 weeks apart. A single peel provides improvement, but cumulative treatments deliver the most significant results for hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, fine lines, and uneven texture. Your clinician will recommend the optimal number of sessions during your consultation.
Can I wear makeup during peeling?
We recommend avoiding makeup during the active peeling phase (typically days 2–5) to allow the skin to shed naturally and breathe. If you must wear makeup, use mineral-based, non-comedogenic products applied gently over a layer of moisturizer. Avoid full-coverage foundations that require rubbing to apply.
