What Is Dermal Fillers?
How It Works
Comprehensive Facial Assessment
Your treatment begins with a detailed analysis of your facial anatomy, proportions, and volume loss patterns. Your clinician evaluates your bone structure, fat pad distribution, and skin quality from multiple angles. Using an understanding of facial aging dynamics, we identify the areas where strategic volume replacement will achieve the most impactful, natural-looking improvement.
Customized Treatment Plan
Based on your assessment, a personalized injection plan is developed specifying the filler type, volume, and placement strategy for each treatment area. We follow an evidence-based approach that prioritizes structural support — often starting with deeper structural areas like the cheeks and jawline before addressing superficial concerns like nasolabial folds or lips. This approach creates a naturally lifted, refreshed appearance rather than an overfilled look.
Precision Injection
Depending on the treatment area, your clinician uses either a fine needle or a flexible cannula (a blunt-tipped instrument that minimizes bruising) to place the filler at the precise depth and location needed. Most HA fillers contain built-in lidocaine (a local anesthetic) for comfort. The injection process involves careful layering and molding of the product to achieve smooth, even results. Your clinician continually assesses symmetry and balance throughout the procedure.
Assessment & Refinement
After the filler is placed, your clinician evaluates the results from multiple angles, checking for symmetry, proportion, and natural movement. Minor molding adjustments may be made. You will be provided with a mirror to review and discuss the results. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled for 2 weeks to assess the final settled result and make any fine-tuning adjustments if desired.
Who Is It For?
- Adults experiencing age-related volume loss in the cheeks, temples, or under-eye area
- Individuals with deepening nasolabial folds (smile lines) or marionette lines
- Those seeking lip enhancement — volume, definition, or hydration
- Clients wanting to define or sharpen the jawline and chin
- People with under-eye hollows or dark circles caused by volume loss (tear troughs)
- Individuals looking to restore a more youthful facial shape without surgery
- Those with asymmetrical facial features seeking balance and proportion
- Clients who want to complement their Botox/Dysport results with volume restoration
What to Expect
Before
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements — including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol — for at least 48 hours before your appointment to minimize bruising risk. If you have a history of cold sores, particularly if treating the lip area, notify your clinician so a prophylactic antiviral can be prescribed. Arrive with a clean face free of makeup in the treatment areas. Eat a light meal before your appointment to ensure comfort during the procedure.
During
The treatment typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on the number of areas being addressed. Your clinician begins by marking the planned injection sites. Most modern HA fillers contain lidocaine for comfort; additional topical numbing cream or a dental nerve block (for lip treatments) may be applied. You will feel pressure and mild stinging during injection, but most clients find the procedure very tolerable. The clinician continually checks symmetry and asks for your feedback throughout the process.
After
Mild swelling, tenderness, and possible bruising at the injection sites are normal and expected. Swelling is most pronounced in the first 24–48 hours, particularly in the lips, where significant swelling is common for 2–3 days. Apply ice gently (wrapped in cloth) in 10-minute intervals to manage swelling. Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga), and alcohol for 24 hours. Do not massage or apply pressure to the treated areas for 2 weeks unless instructed by your clinician. The filler settles into its final position over 1–2 weeks, at which point you will see your true, natural-looking result.
Results & Recovery
Dermal filler results are visible immediately, though final results are best assessed after 2 weeks once any swelling has resolved and the filler has fully integrated with the surrounding tissue. Most HA fillers last between 6–18 months depending on the product used, the treatment area, and individual metabolism. Lip fillers tend to be metabolized more quickly (6–9 months) due to the high mobility of the lip area, while fillers placed in less dynamic areas like the cheeks may last 12–18 months or longer. Recovery is minimal — most clients return to work and social activities the same day with only minor swelling and occasional bruising that can be easily concealed with makeup.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dermal fillers last?+
The longevity of dermal fillers depends on the specific product, treatment area, and your individual metabolism. Lip fillers typically last 6–9 months due to the high mobility and blood flow in the lip area. Cheek and midface fillers generally last 12–18 months. Jawline fillers can last 12–24 months when placed along the bone. Under-eye (tear trough) fillers tend to last 9–12 months. Your clinician will discuss expected longevity for your specific treatment during your consultation and recommend a maintenance schedule to sustain your results.
Are dermal fillers reversible?+
Yes — this is one of the major advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers. If you are unhappy with a result, experience a complication, or simply want to return to your baseline, the enzyme hyaluronidase can be injected to dissolve the HA filler. The dissolution process begins immediately and the filler is typically fully broken down within 24–48 hours. This reversibility provides an important safety net that is not available with non-HA fillers. At Rani Beauty Clinic, we always keep hyaluronidase on hand as part of our safety protocol.
Will fillers make me look overdone or unnatural?+
Not when performed by skilled, experienced injectors with a conservative philosophy — which is exactly our approach at Rani Beauty Clinic. The 'overfilled' look you may have seen is the result of too much product placed without regard for facial proportions and balance. Our clinicians follow an evidence-based, artistry-driven approach that respects your natural facial anatomy. We often recommend treating in stages, starting with a conservative volume and adding more at a follow-up if desired, rather than over-treating in a single session. Dr. Landfield's medical oversight ensures that every treatment plan prioritizes natural-looking, harmonious results.
What is the difference between fillers and Botox?+
Botox and Dysport are neurotoxins that work by relaxing muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles — the lines that appear when you make facial expressions (like frown lines and crow's feet). Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected beneath the skin to add volume, smooth static wrinkles (lines visible even at rest), and enhance facial contours. They address different aspects of facial aging and are often used together for comprehensive rejuvenation. Neurotoxins are best for the upper face (forehead, frown lines, crow's feet), while fillers excel in the mid and lower face (cheeks, nasolabial folds, lips, jawline). Many of our clients benefit from a combination approach.
Does getting fillers hurt?+
Most clients find dermal filler treatments very tolerable. The majority of modern HA fillers contain built-in lidocaine (a local anesthetic) that numbs the tissue as the product is injected. For lip treatments, we can apply a topical numbing cream or perform a dental nerve block for additional comfort. When using a cannula (a blunt-tipped instrument), only one entry point is needed for a larger treatment area, further reducing discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as mild pressure with occasional brief stinging. Any discomfort resolves immediately after the injection.
How much do dermal fillers cost?+
Dermal filler pricing is per syringe, and the number of syringes needed depends on your treatment areas and goals. Most clients need 1–2 syringes for lips and 2–4 syringes for cheek volume restoration. Angel Glow Up members save 5–15% on filler treatments depending on their membership tier. We accept HSA/FSA cards, and financing is available through Cherry and PatientFi with no credit impact. Call us at (425) 539-4440 for a consultation and personalized quote.
