Aftercare Guide

Laser Hair Removal Aftercare

Reviewed by Dr. Alexander Landfield, Board-Certified Neurologist

Your laser hair removal session is complete — now proper aftercare ensures the best results. Follow this physician-approved aftercare guide from Rani Beauty Clinic to protect your skin, minimize side effects, and maximize permanent hair reduction.

Immediately After Treatment

  • 1Apply the soothing aloe-based gel provided by your clinician to the treated area
  • 2Use a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in cloth if you experience mild redness or warmth
  • 3Avoid touching or scratching the treated area to prevent irritation
  • 4Keep the treated area clean and dry for the first few hours

First 24 Hours

  • Avoid hot showers, baths, saunas, and steam rooms — lukewarm water only
  • Skip strenuous exercise, gym workouts, and activities that cause excessive sweating
  • Do not apply makeup, deodorant, or fragranced products to the treated area
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the treated area to reduce friction
  • Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer if the skin feels dry

First Week

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily to the treated area when going outdoors
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least 2 weeks
  • Do NOT wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams — shaving is permitted after 48 hours
  • Treated hairs will appear to grow for 1–3 weeks before shedding — this is normal
  • Exfoliate gently after 5–7 days to help shed treated hairs
  • Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs for at least 48 hours

Long-Term Care & Maintenance

  • Continue sun protection between sessions to prevent hyperpigmentation
  • Schedule your next session 4–8 weeks after treatment (timing depends on body area)
  • Maintain a consistent treatment schedule — 6–8 sessions are needed for optimal results
  • Annual maintenance sessions (1–2 per year) may be needed for hormonally-driven regrowth
  • Keep the treatment area moisturized between sessions

Things to Avoid

  • Waxing, plucking, or threading between sessions (the laser needs the follicle intact)
  • Direct sun exposure or tanning for 2+ weeks before and after treatment
  • Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and other exfoliating products on the treated area for 5–7 days
  • Hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms for 24–48 hours post-treatment
  • Perfumed lotions, deodorants, or harsh chemicals on the treated area
  • Picking at or scratching treated skin

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does redness last after laser hair removal?

Mild redness and slight swelling are normal and typically resolve within a few hours to 24 hours. The treated area may feel similar to a mild sunburn. If redness persists beyond 48 hours, contact our clinic. Applying a cold compress and aloe gel can help reduce redness faster.

When will treated hairs fall out after laser hair removal?

Treated hairs shed naturally over 1–3 weeks following your session. They may appear to continue growing at first — this is the hair being pushed out of the follicle, not new growth. You can gently exfoliate the area after 5–7 days to help the shedding process.

Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?

Yes, shaving is permitted between sessions and is actually the recommended hair removal method during your treatment plan. You can resume shaving 48 hours after your session. Do NOT wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams, as these remove the hair follicle that the laser needs to target.

Can I exercise after laser hair removal?

Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that cause sweating for 24–48 hours after treatment. Sweat can irritate the treated follicles and increase the risk of folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles). Light walking is fine.

How do I prevent hyperpigmentation after laser hair removal?

The most important step is strict sun protection. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily to the treated area and avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before and after each session. Avoid tanning beds and self-tanners. If you have darker skin, our clinicians use the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength which is specifically designed to minimize pigmentation risks.

When should I schedule my next laser hair removal session?

Sessions are typically spaced 4–8 weeks apart, depending on the treatment area. Facial hair may require sessions every 4 weeks, while body areas like legs may be spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Your clinician will recommend the optimal schedule based on your hair growth cycle.
