The Alexandrite wavelength at 755 nanometers is strongly absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair follicles and skin lesions. This high melanin absorption makes it exceptionally efficient for hair removal on lighter skin. The laser energy is preferentially absorbed by the dark hair follicle while the lighter surrounding skin absorbs minimal energy. This selective photothermolysis principle ensures maximum efficacy with minimal side effects.
The Nd:YAG wavelength at 1064 nanometers penetrates deeper into the skin and has lower melanin absorption compared to the Alexandrite.
