Chemical peels produce dramatic skin renewal when patients follow proper preparation and aftercare protocols. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we provide comprehensive care instructions for every peel to ensure you achieve the beautiful, fresh results these treatments deliver.
Pre-peel preparation begins two weeks before your appointment. Discontinue retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and any exfoliating products. These products thin the skin's outer layer, and using them before a peel can cause excessive depth of penetration, leading to prolonged healing and potential complications. Your clinician may provide specific pre-peel skincare to use during this preparatory period.
Avoid sun exposure for two weeks before your peel. Tanned or sun-damaged skin responds unpredictably to chemical peels, increasing the risk of uneven results and hyperpigmentation. If you have had significant sun exposure, your appointment may need to be rescheduled to a safer time.
Inform your clinician about any history of cold sores. Chemical peels can trigger herpes simplex outbreaks in susceptible patients. Antiviral medication may be prescribed prophylactically to prevent an outbreak during the healing period.
During the peel application, expect varying sensations depending on the peel type. Light peels cause mild tingling. The VI Peel produces a warm, prickling sensation during application. These sensations are temporary and typically resolve within minutes of application. Your clinician monitors your comfort throughout and can apply cooling as needed.
Post-peel instructions vary by peel type and depth. For VI Peels and medium-depth peels, leave the peel solution on for the specified duration, typically four to six hours, before following the specific wash-off instructions provided. Do not wash the area before the prescribed time.
The peeling process begins approximately two to three days after a VI Peel and lasts five to seven days. Peeling may range from subtle flaking to visible sheet peeling depending on the peel type and your skin's response. The peeling is a sign that the treatment is working and fresh, renewed skin is emerging beneath.
Do not pull, pick, or force peeling skin. This is the most important aftercare instruction. Premature removal of peeling skin can cause scarring, hyperpigmentation, and uneven results. Allow the skin to shed naturally, even if areas are partially peeling and tempting to assist. Use the post-peel moisturizer provided to keep peeling skin soft and comfortable.
Keep treated skin hydrated and protected. Apply the recommended post-peel products including gentle cleanser, healing balm or moisturizer, and sunscreen. These products are specifically designed to support the healing process and should be the only products on your skin during the peeling period.
Strict sun avoidance for four weeks post-peel is mandatory. Newly revealed skin is extremely photosensitive and will hyperpigment readily with UV exposure. SPF 50 is recommended during the healing period, and physical sun avoidance including hats and limited outdoor time during peak UV hours provides additional protection.
Resume active skincare products gradually after peeling is complete and the skin has stabilized. Your clinician will advise when to reintroduce retinoids, vitamin C, and other actives. Typically this occurs ten to fourteen days after the peel, depending on your skin's healing progress.
Mild redness following the peeling phase is normal and gradually resolves over one to two weeks. Makeup can typically be applied once peeling is complete to cover any residual pinkness while the skin finishes healing.
Schedule your next peel at the interval recommended for your specific peel type and treatment goals. VI Peels are typically performed every four to six weeks for a series, then quarterly for maintenance.
Follow your chemical peel protocol from Rani Beauty Clinic.
