The days following your dermal filler treatment are a journey of gradual improvement, and understanding the timeline helps manage expectations beautifully. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we walk every patient through this timeline so you know exactly what is normal at each stage.
Day of treatment: You see immediate results on the treatment table, and your provider may show you the progress with a mirror during the procedure. However, what you see on day zero includes both the filler volume and swelling from the injection process. The combined effect may look slightly more dramatic than your final result, especially in areas like the lips where swelling is most pronounced. Small injection marks, mild bruising, and tenderness are all normal.
Day one: You wake up to the most swelling you will experience. This is completely normal and expected. Lip filler patients often find their lips look noticeably larger than the final result. Cheek filler may make the mid-face look slightly puffy. Under-eye filler can cause temporary puffiness that obscures the correction. Ice application and sleeping with your head elevated help minimize day-one swelling. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and extreme heat.
Day two: Swelling remains significant but may begin to shift. Some patients notice that swelling is worse on one side than the other, which can cause temporary asymmetry. This is normal and not a reflection of uneven filler placement. As swelling resolves, symmetry returns. Continue ice application and gentle care.
Day three through four: Swelling begins to noticeably decrease. You can start to see the shape of your results emerging from behind the swelling. Bruising, if present, may appear more colorful as it goes through the normal healing spectrum from red to purple to yellow-green. This is standard healing. Arnica supplements and arnica gel can help speed bruise resolution.
Day five through seven: The majority of swelling has resolved for most patients. Your results are starting to look much closer to the final outcome. Lip filler patients often feel their lips are settling into a more natural shape and feel after the initial puffiness. You should feel comfortable returning to all normal activities including exercise by day five to seven.
Week two: This is when we consider your results settled for assessment purposes. At your two-week follow-up at Rani Beauty Clinic, your provider will evaluate the results with you, check for symmetry, and determine whether any touch-up is needed. The filler has had time to integrate with your tissue and hydrate fully, giving the most accurate picture of your outcome.
Weeks three through four: Your filler is fully settled and integrated. The product has absorbed water from surrounding tissue, reaching its final volume and consistency. This is your true result. Many patients find they love their results even more at this stage than they did immediately after treatment.
Months two through six: Your results remain stable during this period. Hyaluronic acid fillers maintain their volume consistently for the first several months. You should enjoy your results without significant change during this maintenance window.
Months six through twelve: Depending on the specific filler product, treatment area, and your individual metabolism, you may begin to notice gradual volume decrease. Areas with more movement, like the lips, tend to metabolize filler faster than areas with less movement, like the cheeks. Most patients schedule their maintenance appointment at the point when they notice about 50 percent of the volume has diminished.
Months twelve through eighteen: Most hyaluronic acid fillers have been substantially metabolized by this point. The timeline varies significantly by product - some fillers are designed to last 6 to 9 months while others can last 12 to 18 months or longer.
