Intense pulsed light therapy, commonly called IPL or photofacial, is a versatile light-based treatment that addresses multiple skin concerns simultaneously. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, our Candela GentleMax Pro Plus platform provides IPL capability alongside its laser functions, giving us the flexibility to select the optimal light source for each patient's specific concerns.
IPL differs from laser technology in one fundamental way: while lasers emit a single, specific wavelength of light, IPL emits a broad spectrum of wavelengths, typically ranging from 500 to 1200 nanometers. This broad spectrum can be filtered to target specific chromophores in the skin. When filtered for hemoglobin absorption, IPL targets redness, broken capillaries, and vascular lesions. When filtered for melanin absorption, it targets sun spots, freckles, and pigmentation irregularities.
The ability to treat both vascular and pigmented lesions in a single session makes IPL uniquely efficient for patients with sun damage that includes both brown spots and redness. Traditional laser treatments typically address one chromophore per wavelength, requiring different lasers or settings for different concerns. IPL's broad spectrum allows simultaneous targeting of multiple chromophores.
Sun damage treatment is the primary indication for IPL at Rani Beauty Clinic. The Pacific Northwest may seem unlikely for sun damage, but cumulative UV exposure over decades, combined with the region's outdoor recreation culture, produces significant photodamage in many patients. IPL addresses the resulting age spots, solar lentigines, diffuse redness, and textural changes that make skin appear prematurely aged.
The treatment process involves applying coupling gel to the treatment area, then delivering controlled pulses of light through the handpiece. Each pulse feels like a brief snap accompanied by warmth. Most patients describe the sensation as tolerable without numbing, though topical anesthetic is available for sensitive areas. A full face treatment takes approximately twenty to thirty minutes.
After IPL treatment, treated pigmented spots typically darken over three to seven days before flaking off, revealing clearer skin beneath. Redness and vascular lesions may initially appear more prominent before fading over one to two weeks. The clearing continues progressively as the body processes the treated targets over the following weeks.
A series of three to six IPL sessions spaced three to four weeks apart produces the most comprehensive clearing. Each session addresses additional targets and builds on the improvement from previous treatments. Maintenance sessions once or twice yearly address any new sun damage that develops.
IPL is an important consideration for skin tones. Patients with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I through III) are ideal candidates for IPL because the contrast between the target chromophore and surrounding skin is greatest. Patients with darker skin tones have more epidermal melanin that can compete for light absorption, increasing the risk of unwanted pigmentation changes. For darker skin tones, PicoWay laser provides safer pigmentation treatment due to its minimal heat generation.
At Rani Beauty Clinic, the Candela platform allows us to switch between IPL and laser modalities based on each patient's skin tone, concern type, and treatment goals. This versatility ensures that every patient receives the most appropriate and effective light-based treatment for their individual situation.
Post-treatment care includes strict sun protection, avoidance of heat for twenty-four to forty-eight hours, and gentle skincare. SPF 30 or higher applied diligently prevents new sun damage from replacing what the treatment has cleared.
