Keratosis pilaris, often called KP or chicken skin, is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting approximately forty percent of adults. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we help patients manage these small, rough bumps that typically appear on the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes cheeks.
KP occurs when excess keratin, the protein that forms the outer layer of skin, accumulates around hair follicles, creating small plugs. These plugs form the characteristic rough, sandpaper-like texture with flesh-colored or slightly red bumps. The condition is genetic, tends to run in families, and is associated with dry skin conditions including eczema.
While KP is medically harmless, it is cosmetically bothersome for many patients. The rough texture is particularly noticeable in sleeveless clothing and swimwear, and many patients have felt self-conscious about their arms for years before seeking treatment.
Home care is the foundation of KP management. Chemical exfoliants are more effective than physical scrubs for KP because they dissolve the keratin plugs chemically rather than physically abrading the surface. Products containing glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or urea at appropriate concentrations gradually thin the keratin buildup. Apply these to affected areas after showering when skin is clean.
Moisturizing is essential because KP worsens with dry skin. Immediately after chemical exfoliant application, apply a rich body moisturizer containing ceramides and fatty acids. Avoid products with fragrances that can irritate already-sensitive KP-affected skin. Consistent moisturizing significantly reduces the rough texture over four to eight weeks.
Professional treatments accelerate improvement beyond what home care alone achieves. HydraFacial can be applied to body areas, using the vortex suction to remove keratin plugs from follicles more effectively than topical products alone. The treatment also infuses hydrating serums directly into the treated skin.
Chemical peels designed for body application provide more intensive exfoliation. BioRePeel applied to KP-affected areas delivers TCA-based exfoliation with biostimulating benefits. A series of four to six treatments spaced one to two weeks apart produces visible smoothing.
Laser hair removal can improve KP by reducing the hair follicle activity that contributes to keratin accumulation. While not a primary KP treatment, patients who have laser hair removal on their arms often notice improvement in their KP as a secondary benefit.
Environmental factors affect KP severity. The condition typically worsens in winter when humidity drops and skin dries out, and improves in summer when humidity increases and UV exposure naturally exfoliates skin. In the Pacific Northwest, the prolonged winter season means many patients experience worsening from October through March.
Consistency is the key to KP management. The condition is chronic and returns if treatment stops. However, maintaining a simple routine of chemical exfoliant plus moisturizer daily, with periodic professional treatments, keeps KP well-controlled. Most patients find that once they establish their routine, management becomes effortless.
Schedule a skin assessment at Rani Beauty Clinic if KP has been a source of frustration. We can help you develop an effective management plan.
