Laser treatments produce their best results when patients follow specific pre and post-treatment protocols. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we provide detailed instructions for every laser treatment to ensure optimal healing and outcomes.
Pre-treatment preparation begins two to four weeks before your laser appointment. Avoid sun exposure and tanning, including self-tanners, for at least two weeks before treatment. Tanned skin increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and burns because the laser cannot distinguish between the melanin in tanned skin and the targets it is intended to treat. If you have recent sun exposure, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.
Discontinue photosensitizing products two to seven days before treatment depending on the specific laser. Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and benzoyl peroxide increase skin sensitivity and can cause adverse reactions during laser treatment. Your clinician will specify which products to pause and when.
Avoid blood-thinning supplements and medications for seven to fourteen days before treatment following the same protocol as Botox preparation. This reduces bruising risk and promotes optimal healing.
Arrive with clean, product-free skin in the treatment area. No makeup, sunscreen, moisturizer, or other products should be on the skin. If coming directly from work or activities, plan to cleanse the area or allow time for our team to prepare your skin.
For laser hair removal specifically, shave the treatment area twenty-four to forty-eight hours before your appointment. The laser targets the hair follicle beneath the skin surface, and surface hair can absorb energy that should reach the follicle. Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams, as these remove the hair root that the laser needs to target.
Post-treatment care varies by laser type and intensity. For IPL and PicoWay treatments, expect redness and mild warmth for a few hours to a day. Treated pigment spots may darken temporarily before flaking off over the following week. Apply cool compresses and the soothing products recommended by your clinician. Avoid heat, sun, and active skincare products for the specified period.
Sun protection after laser treatment is critical and non-negotiable. Apply SPF 30 or higher to treated areas every morning for at least four weeks post-treatment, regardless of weather. Reapply throughout the day if spending time outdoors. Sun exposure after laser treatment significantly increases the risk of hyperpigmentation that can be worse than the original concern.
Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling any treated areas. Darkened pigment spots and any mild crusting will shed naturally over seven to fourteen days. Prematurely removing this tissue disrupts healing and increases scarring and pigmentation risk.
Moisturize treated areas consistently. The healing skin needs hydration to repair optimally. Gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers and the specific post-treatment products recommended by your clinician support barrier repair and reduce irritation during the healing period.
Avoid active skincare ingredients for the period specified by your clinician. Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, and other active ingredients should not be applied to treated skin until it has fully healed. Resuming actives too early can cause irritation, prolonged redness, and pigmentation.
Schedule follow-up appointments at the intervals recommended for your specific treatment series. Consistency in treatment timing optimizes cumulative results and ensures each session builds upon the healing from the previous one.
Follow your laser care protocol from Rani Beauty Clinic.
