Microneedling with PRP: The Vampire Facial Explained

Microneedling with PRP, often called the Vampire Facial, is one of the most popular combination treatments in aesthetic medicine. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we use this treatment to amplify the skin-renewing benefits of microneedling with the healing power of your own blood.

What Is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It is derived from your own blood through a simple process. A small blood draw is taken (similar to a routine lab draw). The blood is placed in a centrifuge, which spins at high speed to separate its components. The platelet-rich layer is extracted and concentrated.

Platelets contain growth factors, proteins that play a critical role in tissue repair, collagen production, and cellular regeneration. When applied to the skin during microneedling, these growth factors are delivered directly into the treatment area through the microchannels created by the needles.

How Microneedling with PRP Works

Standard microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body's wound-healing response and stimulating collagen production. When PRP is added to this process, the concentrated growth factors from your platelets supercharge the healing response.

The growth factors in PRP stimulate fibroblast activity, promoting increased collagen and elastin production. They accelerate tissue repair and cellular turnover. They promote angiogenesis, improving blood flow to the treated area. And they enhance the overall regenerative response beyond what microneedling achieves alone.

What Microneedling with PRP Treats

Fine lines and wrinkles: The combined collagen-stimulating effect smooths fine lines and improves skin texture.

Acne scars: PRP's growth factors enhance the scar-remodeling effects of microneedling, making this combination particularly effective for atrophic scarring.

Uneven skin tone: The enhanced cellular turnover improves hyperpigmentation and creates a more even complexion.

Skin texture and pores: Overall texture improves as new collagen creates a smoother, more refined surface.

Under-eye concerns: Microneedling with PRP can improve the appearance of dark circles, fine lines, and crepiness in the delicate under-eye area.

Hair restoration: PRP can also be applied to the scalp to support hair follicle health and promote growth in patients experiencing thinning hair.

The Treatment Process

Your appointment at Rani Beauty Clinic begins with a blood draw. While the blood is being processed in the centrifuge, your provider applies topical numbing to the treatment area. Once the PRP is ready and the skin is numb, microneedling is performed with the PRP applied topically during and after the treatment, allowing it to penetrate through the microchannels into the deeper skin layers.

The entire appointment takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, including preparation and treatment time.

Recovery

Recovery is similar to standard microneedling. Expect redness and mild swelling for 24 to 72 hours. The skin may feel tight, warm, and slightly sensitive during this period. Avoid direct sun exposure, active ingredients (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs), and heavy makeup for the first 24 to 48 hours. Follow your provider's aftercare instructions for optimal results.

Some patients experience a temporary "glow down" during the first few days as the skin heals, followed by a noticeable improvement in skin quality as new collagen develops over the following weeks.

Results and Treatment Schedule

Results from microneedling with PRP develop over two to three months as collagen production increases. Most patients see the best results from a series of three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. Maintenance treatments every three to six months help sustain and build upon the results.

The combination of microneedling and PRP produces results that exceed what either treatment achieves independently, making this one of the most effective non-surgical skin rejuvenation options available.
