Tattoo removal technology has advanced significantly, and PicoWay represents the current gold standard. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we use PicoWay picosecond laser technology to help patients remove unwanted tattoos with greater effectiveness and fewer sessions than traditional approaches.

How PicoWay Differs from Traditional Laser Tattoo Removal

Traditional tattoo removal lasers use nanosecond pulse durations, delivering energy in billionths of a second. PicoWay uses picosecond pulses, which are measured in trillionths of a second. This difference matters because shorter pulses deliver energy in a photomechanical rather than photothermal manner.

In practical terms, nanosecond lasers break tattoo ink into smaller pieces primarily through heat. Picosecond lasers shatter ink particles into much tinier fragments through a pressure wave effect. These smaller fragments are more easily absorbed and cleared by your body's immune system, which means faster fading and fewer sessions overall.

What PicoWay Can Treat

Black and dark ink: The most responsive to laser removal. PicoWay's 1064nm wavelength targets dark inks very effectively.

Color tattoos: PicoWay offers multiple wavelengths (1064nm, 785nm, and 532nm) that can target different ink colors. This versatility makes it effective on multicolor tattoos that older lasers struggled to clear, including stubborn blues, greens, reds, and oranges.

Stubborn ink: Tattoos that have not responded well to previous removal attempts with older laser technology may respond to PicoWay's more effective ink fragmentation.

Professional and amateur tattoos: Both professionally applied and amateur ("homemade") tattoos can be treated, though amateur tattoos often respond faster due to less dense ink deposits.

The Treatment Process

Before your first PicoWay session at Rani Beauty Clinic, your provider will evaluate your tattoo, discuss your goals, and develop a treatment plan. Factors that influence the plan include the tattoo's size, location, ink colors, density, age, and your skin type.

During treatment, protective eyewear is worn by both you and your provider. The laser handpiece is passed over the tattoo, delivering rapid pulses of energy. Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Treatment time depends on the tattoo size but typically ranges from a few minutes for small tattoos to 30 minutes or more for larger pieces.

After treatment, the area may appear white or frosted immediately, which resolves within minutes to hours. Redness, swelling, and possible blistering are normal and typically resolve within one to two weeks.

How Many Sessions You Need

The number of sessions varies significantly based on the tattoo's characteristics. Smaller, older tattoos with black ink may require four to six sessions. Larger, newer, multicolor tattoos may require eight to twelve sessions or more. Sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart to allow your body to clear the fragmented ink and the skin to heal between treatments.

PicoWay typically requires fewer sessions than older nanosecond laser systems, which is one of its primary advantages.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Most patients with unwanted tattoos are candidates for PicoWay removal. The treatment is effective across a wide range of skin tones, though careful parameter selection is important for darker skin to minimize the risk of hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation.

Patients should have realistic expectations about the process. Complete removal is the goal, but some tattoos may fade to a faint shadow rather than disappearing entirely. Factors like ink composition, depth of application, and individual immune response all influence outcomes.

Aftercare

Post-treatment care is important for optimal results and healing. Keep the treated area clean and dry. Apply recommended ointment and keep the area covered for the first few days. Avoid sun exposure to the treatment area. Do not pick at any blistering or scabbing. Stay hydrated and maintain good nutrition to support your immune system's clearance of fragmented ink.

At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, we provide detailed aftercare instructions and are available for any concerns between sessions. Your tattoo removal is a process, and we are with you at every stage.
