The Pacific Northwest diet has many strengths: access to fresh seafood, a thriving farm-to-table culture, and an abundance of locally grown produce during the warmer months. But our region also creates specific nutritional gaps that supplementation can address. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we help patients identify and correct the nutritional deficiencies most common among PNW residents.

The Vitamin D Priority

This cannot be overstated: vitamin D supplementation is a near-universal need in the Pacific Northwest. Our latitude limits UVB exposure for most of the year, making dietary and supplemental sources essential. Vitamin D3 at 2,000 to 5,000 IU daily is appropriate for most adults, with testing to guide individual dosing.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Despite our access to Pacific Northwest salmon and seafood, many residents do not consume enough omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fats support cardiovascular health, brain function, joint comfort, and skin quality. If you are not eating fatty fish two to three times per week, an omega-3 supplement providing at least 1,000 mg of combined EPA and DHA daily is recommended.

Magnesium

Magnesium deficiency is widespread across the population, not just in the PNW. Modern agricultural practices have reduced magnesium content in foods, and stress depletes magnesium stores. This mineral supports over 300 enzymatic reactions including energy production, muscle function, and sleep quality. Magnesium glycinate or citrate at 200 to 400 mg daily is well tolerated by most adults.

B Vitamins

B vitamins are water-soluble and not stored in large quantities by the body. Dietary inadequacy, stress, alcohol consumption, and certain medications can all deplete B vitamin status. B12 deserves particular attention for adults over 50, vegetarians, and patients on acid-reducing medications. Injection delivery provides the most reliable B12 repletion for patients with absorption concerns.

Iron

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide and is particularly prevalent among premenopausal women and plant-based eaters. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, poor concentration, and cold sensitivity, all of which can be amplified by the PNW winter climate. Iron testing should be part of any workup for unexplained fatigue.

Probiotics and Gut Health

The gut microbiome influences immunity, mood, nutrient absorption, and metabolic health. Probiotic supplementation supports gut health, particularly for patients who have taken antibiotics, who eat a limited diet, or who experience digestive concerns. Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut provide dietary probiotic support.

A Lab-Guided Approach

Rather than guessing which supplements you need, lab testing provides objective data. At Rani Beauty Clinic, our wellness evaluation includes testing for vitamin D, B12, iron, and other markers that reveal your specific nutritional needs. This targeted approach ensures you supplement what you actually need rather than spending money on products that may not benefit you.
