Pregnancy-Safe Beauty: What Treatments and Products Are Safe During Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings many changes to your skin and your beauty routine. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, Dr. Landfield takes a conservative approach to treatments during pregnancy, prioritizing the safety of both mother and baby above all else.

The guiding principle: When it comes to aesthetic treatments during pregnancy, we err on the side of caution. While many treatments are likely safe, the ethical constraints of testing products and procedures on pregnant women mean that definitive safety data is limited. Our approach is to avoid any treatment where safety during pregnancy has not been conclusively established.

Treatments to avoid during pregnancy: Botox and all neuromodulators - while there is no evidence of harm, these have not been proven safe during pregnancy and should be avoided. Dermal fillers - same reasoning as neuromodulators. Chemical peels with high concentrations of acids, particularly salicylic acid at high concentrations and retinoid-containing peels. Laser treatments - hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect how skin responds to laser energy, increasing risks of hyperpigmentation. RF microneedling and Sofwave. GLP-1 medications - these must be discontinued before pregnancy and are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Prescription tretinoin and all retinoids - these are pregnancy Category X and must be discontinued.

Skincare ingredients to avoid: Retinol and retinoids (all forms), high-dose salicylic acid (low-dose topical is generally considered acceptable), hydroquinone, chemical sunscreen filters (oxybenzone, avobenzone), formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and high-dose essential oils.

Treatments that are generally safe during pregnancy: HydraFacials (using pregnancy-safe serums), gentle facials without aggressive active ingredients, LED light therapy (no UV), and gentle manual lymphatic drainage massage.

Skincare ingredients considered safe during pregnancy: Vitamin C (topical), hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, azelaic acid (for pregnancy-related melasma), glycolic acid at low concentrations, mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide), ceramides, and peptides.

Pregnancy skin changes: Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can cause melasma (pregnancy mask), increased acne, skin sensitivity, and changes in oil production. These changes are typically temporary and resolve after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Azelaic acid is the safest prescription treatment for pregnancy-related melasma and acne.

Planning around pregnancy: If you are planning to become pregnant, discuss your treatment timeline with your Rani Beauty Clinic provider. Ideally, complete any treatment series before conception. If you are using tretinoin, switch to a pregnancy-safe alternative at least one month before trying to conceive. Botox treatments should be discontinued before pregnancy.

The pregnancy skincare routine: A simplified, safe routine during pregnancy includes a gentle cleanser, vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid moisturizer, and mineral sunscreen. This combination provides basic anti-aging and skin health benefits while being safe for both mother and baby.

Post-pregnancy return to treatment: After delivery, the timeline for resuming treatments depends on whether you are breastfeeding. Most treatments can resume after you finish breastfeeding. Some treatments may be resumed sooner with your physician's guidance. Dr. Landfield will help you create a post-pregnancy treatment plan that addresses any skin changes from pregnancy and gets you back to your full routine safely.

The reassurance: While pregnancy requires pausing some treatments, the temporary break does not erase the progress you have made. The skin quality improvements from your pre-pregnancy routine and treatments provide a strong foundation. Once you can safely resume, you will be building on that foundation, not starting from scratch.
