Platelet-rich plasma therapy for hair loss harnesses your body's own regenerative capacity to stimulate hair growth. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, PRP scalp treatments are a cornerstone of our hair restoration program, offering a natural, autologous approach that many patients prefer.
The science behind PRP is straightforward. A small sample of your blood is drawn and processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich fraction from other blood components. Platelets contain concentrated growth factors including PDGF, VEGF, EGF, and TGF-beta that play critical roles in tissue repair and regeneration. When injected into the scalp, these growth factors stimulate dormant follicles, increase blood supply to the hair papilla, and extend the active growth phase of the hair cycle.
The treatment process begins with a blood draw, typically one to two tubes. The blood is processed for approximately ten minutes while the scalp is numbed with topical anesthetic. The concentrated PRP is then injected into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles using a fine needle in a systematic pattern across the thinning areas. The entire procedure takes approximately forty-five minutes.
Research supports PRP efficacy for hair loss. Multiple studies have demonstrated increased hair density, hair thickness, and anagen-to-telogen ratio in patients receiving PRP treatments compared to controls. The autologous nature of PRP, using your own biological material, minimizes the risk of allergic reaction or rejection.
Treatment protocols typically involve three initial sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every three to four months. Some patients benefit from monthly treatments during the initial phase, depending on the severity of their hair loss. Results begin to appear at two to three months as shedding decreases and new growth initiates.
PRP works synergistically with other hair restoration treatments. Combining PRP with Folix hair restoration provides both autologous growth factors from PRP and the exogenous growth factors and peptides from Folix, creating a comprehensive growth stimulus. Adding topical minoxidil between PRP sessions extends the growth phase independently, amplifying overall results.
Patient factors influence PRP outcomes. Patients with recent-onset thinning and good follicle density respond best because more follicles are available for reactivation. Those with longstanding baldness where follicles have been permanently lost may see limited response in completely bare areas. Nutritional status, overall health, and medication use also influence the concentration and quality of growth factors in your PRP.
The quality of PRP preparation matters significantly. Different centrifuge systems and processing protocols produce different platelet concentrations. Higher platelet concentration generally correlates with better outcomes. At Rani Beauty Clinic, we use a system optimized for high platelet yield and growth factor concentration.
Post-treatment care is minimal. Mild scalp tenderness and redness resolve within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Hair can be washed the following day. Blood thinning medications and supplements should be discontinued before treatment as directed by your clinician to ensure optimal platelet function.
For patients who are uncomfortable with the injection component, PRP can be combined with microneedling, where the PRP is applied topically and driven into the scalp through the microneedling channels. This approach, while potentially less concentrated at the follicle level, is well-tolerated and effective.
