Skincare Routines

Pacific Northwest summers are glorious, and the extended daylight and outdoor activities make sun protection even more critical. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we help patients transition their skincare routines for the warmer months when UV exposure increases and oil production often ramps up.

The PNW summer skin challenge: After months of overcast skies, the sudden increase in UV exposure during summer can catch skin off guard. Pacific Northwest summers feature long days with UV-intense sunlight from June through September. The temptation to soak up every ray after a dark winter is real, but your skin needs protection during this high-exposure period.

Sunscreen becomes your most important product: Upgrade your sunscreen commitment for summer. Apply SPF 30 or higher every morning, and reapply every two hours during outdoor activities. If you are spending time at the lakes, hiking, or enjoying outdoor dining in Renton, reapplication is essential. Keep a travel-size sunscreen in your bag for easy midday touch-ups.

Switch to a lighter moisturizer: If you used a rich cream in winter, transition to a lightweight gel or gel-cream for summer. Your skin produces more oil in warmer weather, and heavy moisturizers can feel uncomfortable and contribute to congestion. A hyaluronic acid-based gel moisturizer provides hydration without heaviness.

Add or increase antioxidant protection: A vitamin C serum in the morning provides additional free radical protection during the high-UV summer months. Vitamin C works synergistically with sunscreen, boosting your overall UV defense. Look for a stable vitamin C formulation at 10 to 20 percent concentration.

Lighten your cleanser: If you switched to a cream cleanser for winter, return to a gel or foaming cleanser that manages increased summer oil production. Double cleansing in the evening is especially important in summer when you are wearing more sunscreen and spending time outdoors.

Adjust exfoliation: Summer is a good time to maintain regular exfoliation to prevent the congestion that increased oil and sunscreen can cause. However, be mindful that freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive. Exfoliate in the evening and always follow with morning sunscreen.

Retinol in summer: Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to stop retinol in summer. Retinol increases sun sensitivity, but this is managed with consistent sunscreen use, not by abandoning the product. If you are diligent with sun protection, maintaining your retinol year-round provides uninterrupted anti-aging benefits. However, if you are spending extensive time outdoors, discuss with your provider whether reducing frequency is appropriate.

Hydration from within: Summer heat increases water loss through perspiration. Increase your water intake during warm months to support skin hydration from the inside. Dehydrated skin looks dull and emphasizes fine lines. Aim for at least eight to ten glasses of water daily, more if you are exercising outdoors.

Post-sun care: If you do get more sun exposure than intended, apply aloe vera or a soothing moisturizer to calm the skin. Antioxidant serums help neutralize free radical damage from UV exposure. If you experience a sunburn, avoid active ingredients until the skin heals and consult with our team if the burn is severe.

Summer treatment considerations: While laser treatments and deep peels are best scheduled for fall and winter, HydraFacials, Botox, and light maintenance treatments are perfectly appropriate year-round with proper sun protection. Discuss your summer treatment plan with your Rani Beauty Clinic provider.
