First-Timer Guide
First Time Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect
Expert guidance from Dr. Alexander Landfield, Board-Certified Neurologist
Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to achieve smooth, hair-free skin — and your first session sets the foundation for lasting results. At Rani Beauty Clinic, we use advanced laser technology safe for all skin tones, with every treatment supervised by our medical team. Here's your complete guide to your first visit.
Pain Level
Most patients describe it as a rubber band snap — rated 3–4 out of 10, with built-in cooling for added comfort
Duration
15–60 minutes depending on the treatment area (underarms take 15 minutes, full legs up to 60)
Downtime
No downtime — mild redness similar to a light sunburn typically resolves within a few hours
Sessions
6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart for optimal permanent hair reduction, with 1–2 annual maintenance sessions
Before Your Appointment
- 1Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment — do NOT wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams, as the laser needs the hair follicle intact
- 2Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for at least 2 weeks before treatment to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation
- 3Discontinue retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs on the treatment area for 5–7 days prior
- 4Arrive with clean skin — no lotions, deodorants, or products on the treatment area
- 5Wear loose, comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the treatment area
During Your Treatment
Skin Assessment
Your clinician evaluates your skin tone, hair color, and the treatment area to determine the optimal laser settings for your unique profile.
Preparation
The treatment area is cleaned and a cooling gel may be applied. You'll be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser light.
Laser Application
The laser handpiece is placed against your skin and delivers controlled pulses of light energy. Each pulse targets dozens of hair follicles simultaneously. Most patients describe the sensation as a rubber band snap accompanied by a warm sensation.
Cooling & Comfort
Our laser features built-in cooling technology that soothes the skin with each pulse, minimizing discomfort throughout the treatment.
Post-Treatment Care
A soothing aloe-based gel is applied to the treated area. Your clinician reviews aftercare instructions and schedules your next session.
After Your Treatment
- Apply the provided soothing gel and a cold compress if you experience mild redness or warmth
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily to the treated area
- Treated hairs will appear to continue growing for 1–3 weeks before shedding — this is normal and expected
- Shaving is permitted after 48 hours, but do NOT wax or pluck between sessions
When Will I See Results?
Hair shedding begins 1–3 weeks after your first session, with noticeable reduction after 2–3 sessions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most patients find laser hair removal much more comfortable than waxing. The sensation is often described as a rubber band snap with a warm feeling. Our laser includes built-in cooling technology that soothes the skin with each pulse. Sensitive areas like the bikini line may feel slightly more intense, but the discomfort is brief and manageable.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most patients need 6–8 sessions for optimal results. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only target follicles in the active growth phase. Spacing sessions 4–8 weeks apart ensures we catch each hair during its growth cycle. After completing your initial series, 1–2 annual maintenance sessions keep results smooth.
Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?
Yes. At Rani Beauty Clinic, we use advanced laser technology with the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength, specifically designed for safe, effective treatment on all skin tones, including darker complexions. Your clinician will customize the laser settings for your unique skin profile to ensure both safety and efficacy.
What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?
We treat virtually any area of the body where unwanted hair grows, including the face (upper lip, chin), underarms, bikini line, full Brazilian, arms, legs, chest, back, and abdomen. During your first consultation, your clinician will help you prioritize areas and create a customized treatment plan.
Why do I need to shave before laser hair removal?
Shaving ensures the laser energy is focused on the hair follicle beneath the skin's surface rather than being absorbed by hair above the skin. This makes the treatment safer, more effective, and more comfortable. Shave 24 hours before your appointment — never wax or pluck, as these remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
