Physical activity is an essential component of your GLP-1 weight management program. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we encourage patients to stay active throughout treatment while being mindful of how the medication affects their exercise experience.

Exercise Is Encouraged, Not Restricted

GLP-1 therapy does not require exercise restriction. In fact, regular physical activity enhances your results by increasing calorie expenditure, preserving lean muscle mass during weight loss, improving cardiovascular health, boosting mood and energy, improving insulin sensitivity, and supporting long-term weight maintenance.

The question is not whether to exercise, but how to exercise effectively while on GLP-1 therapy.

The First Week After Starting or Increasing Dose

When you start GLP-1 therapy or move to a higher dose, your body is adjusting to the medication. During this adjustment period, it is reasonable to moderate your exercise intensity. Walk instead of run. Use lighter weights. Choose gentle yoga over intense HIIT. Listen to your body and reduce intensity if you feel nauseous, lightheaded, or unusually fatigued.

After the adjustment period (typically one to two weeks), most patients can resume their normal exercise intensity.

Best Types of Exercise During GLP-1 Therapy

Walking: The most accessible and underrated exercise. A daily 30-minute walk provides cardiovascular benefit, fresh air, and stress reduction with minimal risk of injury or GI discomfort.

Resistance training: Critically important during weight loss. Resistance training preserves lean muscle mass, which maintains your metabolic rate and improves body composition. Aim for two to three resistance sessions per week, working all major muscle groups.

Low-impact cardio: Swimming, cycling, elliptical training, and rowing provide cardiovascular benefit without the joint stress of high-impact activities.

Yoga and stretching: Supports flexibility, stress management, and mind-body connection. Gentle yoga is well-tolerated even during the first week of a new dose.

HIIT and intense training: Can be continued by patients who are already conditioned for it, but should be moderated during dose adjustment periods.

Exercise Timing Relative to Injection

There is no strict rule about exercising on injection day. Most patients exercise normally on their injection day without issues. If you find that exercise shortly after injection triggers nausea, schedule your workout before your injection or on a different day. Experiment to find what works best for your body.

Nutrition and Exercise on GLP-1

With reduced appetite on GLP-1 therapy, ensuring adequate fuel for exercise requires intentional planning. Have a protein-rich snack 30 to 60 minutes before your workout. Stay hydrated before, during, and after exercise. Consume a protein-rich meal or shake within one to two hours after resistance training. Do not exercise on a completely empty stomach if you tend toward nausea.

Signs to Scale Back

Reduce exercise intensity if you feel nauseous during or after exercise. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy. If you are significantly more fatigued than usual. If you have not been able to eat adequately that day. If you are dehydrated.

These are signals to listen to your body, not push through. On days when your body needs rest, rest is the appropriate response.

Building an Exercise Routine That Lasts

At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, we help patients build exercise routines that are sustainable, enjoyable, and aligned with their treatment goals. The best exercise program is one you will actually do consistently. Find activities you enjoy, build them into your weekly schedule, and progressively increase intensity as your fitness improves and your body adjusts to treatment.
