Getting a Chemical Peel for the First Time

If you have never had a chemical peel, the process can seem intimidating. Understanding what happens at each stage helps you feel confident and prepared for your first experience.

Before your peel, we assess your skin type, concerns, and sensitivity during a consultation. We may recommend starting with a lighter peel (glycolic or lactic acid) for your first treatment. Discontinue retinol products 3-5 days before your appointment. Arrive with clean, product-free skin.

During the peel, your clinician cleanses your skin and applies the acid solution. You may feel tingling, warmth, or a mild stinging sensation — this is normal and indicates the acids are working. The solution is left on for a specific time period, then neutralized and removed. The entire process takes 20-40 minutes.

After a light peel, you may experience mild redness and tightness for a few hours. With a medium peel, expect 3-7 days of peeling and sensitivity. Follow your aftercare instructions carefully: use gentle cleanser and moisturizer, apply SPF 30+ daily, avoid picking or peeling the skin, and skip active ingredients like retinol until fully healed.

Most patients describe a tingling or mild stinging sensation during application. Light peels are very tolerable. Your clinician monitors your comfort throughout and can adjust if needed.

For first-time patients, we often start with a light peel (glycolic or lactic acid) to see how your skin responds. If tolerated well, you can progress to a medium peel like the VI Peel for more dramatic results.

Stop retinol and exfoliating products 3-5 days before. Avoid waxing, sun exposure, and tanning for 2 weeks before. Inform your clinician about any medications you are taking, especially Accutane (current or recent).
