Treatment Deep Dive

Chemical peels are among the most established treatments in aesthetic medicine, and understanding the different depth levels helps patients choose the right peel for their goals. At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we offer peels at various depths to address a range of skin concerns.

What determines peel depth: The depth of a chemical peel depends on the type of acid used, its concentration, the pH of the solution, the duration of application, and the number of layers applied. These variables allow providers to precisely control how deeply the peel penetrates the skin, from the superficial epidermis through the papillary dermis to the deeper reticular dermis.

Superficial peels (epidermis only): Superficial peels affect only the outermost layer of skin, the epidermis. Common agents include low-concentration glycolic acid (20 to 35 percent), salicylic acid (20 to 30 percent), lactic acid, and light TCA (10 to 20 percent). These peels produce minimal visible peeling, typically light flaking for one to three days. No downtime is required. Results include improved brightness, smoother texture, and reduction in superficial discoloration. They are excellent for maintenance and can be performed every two to four weeks.

Medium-depth peels (papillary dermis): Medium-depth peels penetrate through the epidermis into the upper dermis. The VI Peel, a popular option at Rani Beauty Clinic, falls into this category. Other medium-depth agents include higher-concentration TCA (35 to 50 percent) and combination peels. These produce visible peeling for four to seven days, require five to ten days of recovery, and produce more significant improvement in skin texture, pigmentation, fine lines, and acne scarring. They can be performed every three to six months.

Deep peels (reticular dermis): Deep peels penetrate into the mid to deep dermis. Phenol-based peels are the primary deep peel option. These produce dramatic improvement in deep wrinkles, significant sun damage, and profound textural concerns. However, they require significant downtime (two to four weeks), carry higher risk of complications including scarring and pigmentation changes, and are typically a one-time treatment. Deep peels are rarely performed in medspa settings due to the intensive recovery and risk profile.

The PRX-T33 approach: PRX-T33 is a unique biorevitalization treatment at Rani Beauty Clinic that uses a combination of TCA, hydrogen peroxide, and kojic acid. Unlike traditional peels, PRX-T33 stimulates dermal improvement without significant epidermal disruption, meaning you get collagen stimulation and brightening without the traditional peeling phase. This makes it an excellent option for patients who want improvement without visible downtime.

Choosing the right depth: The best peel depth depends on your concerns, tolerance for downtime, and skin type. Mild dullness and texture: superficial peel. Moderate pigmentation and early aging: medium-depth peel. Acne scarring and deeper texture concerns: medium-depth peel series. Significant sun damage and deep wrinkles: consider medium-depth peel combined with other treatments rather than deep peel.

Skin type considerations: Darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV through VI) carry higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with deeper peels. Superficial peels and PRX-T33 are safer options for darker skin tones. Medium-depth peels may be appropriate with careful preparation and conservative application. Deep peels are generally not recommended for darker skin types.

The series approach: At Rani Beauty Clinic, we often recommend a series of superficial to medium-depth peels rather than a single aggressive peel. This approach produces cumulative improvement with lower risk, more manageable recovery, and the ability to adjust the plan based on how your skin responds to each treatment.
