Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts are powerful tools that allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for qualified medical expenses. Many patients wonder whether they can use these funds at a med spa, and the answer is nuanced. Some treatments may qualify while others do not, depending on whether the treatment is considered medically necessary or purely cosmetic.
The general rule is that HSA and FSA funds can be used for treatments that are prescribed by a physician for a diagnosed medical condition. For example, if a physician determines that a skin condition requires treatment with a chemical peel or laser therapy, those treatments may qualify for HSA or FSA reimbursement. Similarly, certain prescription skincare products recommended for conditions like rosacea or severe acne may be eligible. Treatments for medical weight management may also qualify when prescribed and supervised by a physician.
Purely cosmetic procedures, on the other hand, typically do not qualify. Botox for fine lines, dermal fillers for volume enhancement, and HydraFacials for general skin maintenance are generally considered cosmetic and are not eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement. However, there are exceptions. Botox, for instance, is FDA-approved for chronic migraines and may qualify when prescribed for that condition rather than for cosmetic purposes.
At Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA, we recommend consulting with your HSA or FSA plan administrator to understand exactly what is covered under your specific plan. We can provide documentation of any medically prescribed treatments to support your reimbursement claims. Our team is happy to help you navigate these questions. Keep in mind that FSA funds often expire at the end of the plan year, so if you have unused funds, it is worth exploring whether any qualifying treatments are available to you.
