Laser hair removal is one of the most requested treatments at Rani Beauty Clinic in Renton, WA. It offers a long-term reduction in unwanted hair that saves time, eliminates ingrown hairs, and leaves skin smooth without the constant maintenance of shaving or waxing.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target the melanin (pigment) in hair follicles. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment, converted to heat, and damages the follicle's ability to produce new hair. Because the laser targets pigment specifically, the surrounding skin is largely unaffected when the treatment is performed correctly with appropriate settings.

The key to understanding laser hair removal is the hair growth cycle. Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). The laser is most effective during the anagen phase when the hair is actively growing and the follicle is richest in melanin. Because only a percentage of hairs are in the anagen phase at any given time, multiple sessions are required to catch all follicles during their active growth phase.

Common Treatment Areas

Face and upper lip. Underarms. Bikini area and Brazilian. Legs (full or partial). Arms. Back and chest. Chin and neck. Essentially any area with unwanted hair can be treated, with the exception of areas very close to the eyes.

How Many Sessions You Need

Most patients need six to eight sessions for optimal results, though this varies by treatment area, hair color and thickness, skin type, and hormonal factors. Sessions are typically spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the body area, aligning with the hair growth cycle of each region. Facial hair grows faster and may require sessions every four weeks, while legs and body areas may be treated every six to eight weeks.

After completing the initial series, most patients experience 70 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction. Occasional maintenance sessions may be needed once or twice a year to address any regrowth.

What a Treatment Session Feels Like

Modern laser hair removal technology includes built-in cooling systems that protect the skin and reduce discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick snapping or warm prickling feeling. Sensitive areas like the bikini line or upper lip may be more uncomfortable than areas like the legs or arms. Topical numbing can be applied for sensitive areas if needed.

Treatment time varies by area. An upper lip takes five to ten minutes. Underarms take about 15 minutes. Full legs may take 45 to 60 minutes.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

Laser hair removal works best on patients with contrast between their hair color and skin tone, because the laser targets melanin in the hair. Dark hair on lighter skin has traditionally produced the best results. However, advances in laser technology have expanded candidacy significantly. Modern devices with longer wavelengths and advanced cooling can safely and effectively treat a wider range of skin tones.

Light blonde, red, gray, or white hair contains less melanin and responds poorly to laser hair removal. Patients with these hair colors may not be good candidates.

Preparation and Aftercare

Before your session, avoid waxing, plucking, or electrolysis for four to six weeks, as these remove the hair follicle that the laser needs to target. Shaving is fine and actually recommended the day before treatment. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for two weeks before treatment.

After treatment, the area may appear slightly red and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically resolves within a few hours to a day. Avoid sun exposure, hot baths, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Apply sunscreen diligently to treated areas.

Long-Term Results

Laser hair removal produces long-lasting results that improve quality of life for many patients. No more daily shaving. No ingrown hairs. No razor bumps. The smooth skin that results from treatment is one of the most satisfying outcomes we see at Rani Beauty Clinic. While it requires patience and commitment to complete the full series of treatments, the long-term freedom from unwanted hair is well worth it.
